Crash Report Requests

Crash Reports (CR‑3) — How to Get Yours

Who keeps crash reports?
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is the custodian of crash records for Texas. By law (Texas Transportation Code §550.062), officers must file a crash report with TxDOT within 10 days when a crash involves injury, death, or apparent property damage of $1,000+.

How long are reports kept?
TxDOT retains crash reports for 10 years + the current year. Older data isn’t available.

Who Can Request a Crash Report

You can request a crash report if you’re directly involved or have a proper interest, including:

  • Anyone involved (driver, passenger), their authorized representative, or a parent/guardian of a driver
  • The owner of a vehicle or damaged property
  • An insurance company or policyholder, and claims/underwriting vendors
  • News media (FCC‑licensed radio/TV; qualifying newspapers)
  • Government agencies (U.S., State of Texas, or local)
  • A person who may file a lawsuit due to a death resulting from the crash

Not sure if you qualify? On TxDOT’s CR‑91 form, you can explain your interest. If you don’t meet eligibility, TxDOT may provide a redacted report.

  • Vehicle information (if known)
